Via ferrata

A Via Ferrata is a mountain route which is equipped with fixed cables, ladders and bridges. The use of these allows otherwise inaccessible routes to be joined to create longer routes which are accessible to people with a wide range of climbing abilities. Walkers and climbers can follow via ferratas without needing to use their own equipment, and without the risks associated with more extreme forms of climbing.
France has a six tier rating system for all routes, half of which are generally regarded as suitable for beginners, although a guide is recommended.
Resort tourist offices will be able to offer detailed information and offer advice and recommend a guide. Activity specific equipment is required and is available locally.
Serre Chevalier makes a great base for the region’s Via Ferrata routes. The resort itself is home to the Rocher du Bez route, nearby Briancon has the beginner friendly Croix de Toulouse. A drive away in La Grave, for the more experienced or adventurous of us, there is the infamous Les Mines du Grand Clot which incorporates one sheer cliff face!
Le Hameau du Rocher Blanc offers high standard accommodation from which to base yourself for a holiday of adventures. We recommend a car to make the most of the area and it is possible to make a day trip to Alpe d’Huez, home to another great route.
